WAXING FAQs

Waxing has a long history dating back as far as the Ancient Egyptians.

The traditional Brazilian wax is rumoured to have originated at the J Sisters salon in Manhatten, New York in the early 1990s.  After also featuring in the TV series 'Sex and the City', this type of grooming became incredibly popular.

In the 1980s, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is quoted when running as governor... "It's the most difficult [decision] I've made in my entire life, except the one I made in 1978 when I decided to get a bikini wax.".

INTIMATE WAXING FAQS

What is a Brazilian/Hollywood Wax?

A Brazilian or Hollywood wax involves the removal of hair in the genital area. A Hollywood removes all the hair around the labia or penis & scrotum, as well as on the perineum and anus. A Brazilian is exactly the same, however a 'landing strip' is left behind on the pubis. Whatever your preference is, we can accommodate it.

Can I Keep my Underwear on During the Wax?

We are a no pants establishment! This is so we easily see what we are doing and give you the best service and results possible. In the case of folks who wish to leave a strip of hair, it also allows us to be sure our lines are straight and everything is even. If we can’t see it, we can’t wax it!

Isn’t it Embarrassing?!

Not for us! We appreciate that you may be a little uncomfortable taking off your pants for someone you don't know, but we can assure you that we have seen it all before! We are professionals, specifically trained in what we do. Unlike a more general therapist who may spend a large part of their day giving facials/massages/manicures etc, waxing is what we do day in day out. We would also assure you that we are extremely discreet, and take confidentiality very seriously. We never discuss our clients or their treatments outside of the salon.

Does It Hurt?

We would be lying if we pretended there wasn't some discomfort to an intimate wax. People with fine hair will experience this to a lesser extent than those with coarser hair. Regular treatments are a must, as waxing hair that has regrown finer and sparser following previous waxes really is not a big deal to the vast majority of our clients.

We are also highly trained in what we do and employ the most up-to-date methods to ensure your wax is as pain free as possible. We use a high quality (Perron Rigot) peelable wax, with an oil barrier beneath, so that when removed the wax pulls the hair but very little of the skin. We NEVER use strip wax for intimate areas, underarms or faces.

I’m Still Worried About the Pain!

If you are particularly worried about your wax being painful, some people find taking a couple of paracetamol half an hour before their appointment can help a little. Obviously this is if you are medically fit to do so.

Can I Get An Intimate Wax While Menstruating?

Yes, absolutely. We frequently wax people who are menstruating. There are occasions when you are trying to keep within your waxing cycle that this is necessary. All we ask is that you are clean and fresh, and you wear a tampon.

What If I Become Aroused During the Treatment?

Some clients may experience an involuntary temporary arousal in response to the treatment, however this usually disappears quite rapidly. It is nothing we haven't seen before and we are adept in spotting when this is an unwanted reaction. We will always maintain our professionalism and respect and would ask that you do the same.

Any untoward behaviour either in person or via phone/message is always documented, reported to the Police and noted on professional forums.

Can I Be Waxed If I Have an STD or UTI?

No, it is not advisable to be waxed in this situation due to infection control. Any extra activity in the area could also further aggravate your condition, so we would advise waiting until you are back to full health before booking your appointment.

GENERAL WAXING FAQS

How Often Should I Get Waxed?

For those new to waxing, every 4 weeks is a good guideline for when you will need to return. To start with we want to get all the hairs into the same cycle, which means they are all breaking through the skin at the same time. Until this happens you may find a few hairs that were just under the skin at the time of your wax pop through a week or so later. As time goes by and we have all the hair growing in the same cycle, you will notice your skin stays smooth for far longer, and you may be able to extend the time between treatments.

How Long Should the Hair Be? (And How Long is Too Long?!)

This is a really great (and very important!) question. The correct length of hair will ensure that your wax removes as much hair as possible. A good rule of thumb is 3-4 weeks growth after shaving or using depilatory cream. Of course, some people's hair grows faster than others, but we have found this to be a good general guideline. To ensure the best results, aim for 4 weeks to make sure all hair is long enough to remove (giving you a longer hair-free period post wax). Whilst we appreciate this can be difficult, we can assure you that you will see the benefit when you have had your wax!

Worried your hair is too long? Trimming to an appropriate length is all part of the service and is best left to us, whichever part of the body you are concerned with! We would actually prefer that you don’t trim yourself, just in case you take it too short and we have to send you away again for a little regrowth!

Who Will Be Doing the Treatment?

Alex (she/her) is our waxing technician in both Pocklington and Southbourne.

Is There Anything I Can Do to Prepare For My Wax?

Most important is to make sure your hair is long enough, and that you are hygienic. We also encourage all our clients to exfoliate 2-3 times a week and to lightly moisturise also. This will help to remove any dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs on regrowth. Applying heavy moisturisers on the area to be waxed on the day can be unhelpful as although we do cleanse the area before treatment, thickly applied products can be hard to remove and could affect the quality of your waxing treatment.

How Should I Care For My Skin After?

For the first 24-48 hours after your wax, we recommend you avoid any activity involving excessive heat - hot showers/saunas/steam rooms, anything that will make you sweat. Keep the area out of direct sunlight where possible, and for intimate waxes, much as you may want to show off your newly smooth skin, please do try to wait! We use post-wax products to help care for your skin and keep reactions to a minimum and in most cases this, in conjunction with our aftercare advice, should be sufficient.

How Many Days Before my Holiday Should I Be Waxed?

If you are going on holiday, please note the 24-48 hour recommended time to keep out of direct sunlight, and for first time clients especially we would recommend adhering to 48 hours.

Can I Be Waxed If I Am Pregnant?

Absolutely! We fully appreciate that when you are growing another human you still want to look and feel your best and are more than happy to facilitate that!
