Grow It! – We can’t wax what isn’t there! If you come to us 5 days after shaving and expect to get a great result, you’re going to be disappointed. We usually recommend at least 3 weeks growth (depending on your hair) and even longer if you can manage it! If the hair is too short, not only will the wax not be able to pick it up, but you will also not get such a smooth result as the short hairs will still be poking through close to the skin. The longer you leave it to grow before your wax, the better the result you will get – and don’t worry, if it’s too long, we can trim it!
Exfoliate & Moisturise – Regular exfoliation is absolutely crucial for anyone who waxes. But almost as important is WHAT you use to exfoliate. That 8 year old sea salt scrub you got from your Aunt for Christmas is not appropriate for your intimate areas, or indeed any area that you want to be hair free! Exfoliators of old tended to have extremely abrasive qualities, and indeed we still today see those on sale with ground apricot stones in them. These can cause micro tears on the skin and are far too harsh. A sugar scrub, such as the fabulous Ruff Stuff, will give the right level of exfoliation without damaging your skin, sloughing off those dead skin cells to give the hairs underneath a better chance of breaking through, and less danger of growing inwards, creating those unsightly spots and bumps.
Moisturising is equally important, although again be careful which products you use on your more sensitive areas. Many exfoliators have moisturising properties built into them, but if not, be sure that the products you use are not too heavily perfumed, as this can irritate the skin. Dry, flaky skin can lead to ingrown hairs, so keeping it soft is another way of helping to prevent this uncomfortable issue.
Treat your skin kindly – After your wax, it is important to follow the aftercare advice and be gentle with your skin. Don’t sunbath or exercise right afterwards – instead allow the skin to settle. Avoid tight clothing and places that may spell infection, public swimming baths, steam room sand saunas etc should eb avoided for 24-48 hours after a wax. If you have had an intimate wax, try to avoid getting snuggly with your other half for the same length of time!
